Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Amblyopia—often called “lazy eye”—is one of the most common vision conditions in children, affecting 2–3% of kids worldwide. It happens when one eye doesn’t develop normal vision, usually because the brain starts favoring the other eye. Early treatment makes a major difference, which is why regular eye exams for children are so important.

At our clinic, we diagnose and treat amblyopia using proven methods and modern technology to support healthy visual development.

What Is Amblyopia?

Amblyopia develops when the connection between the brain and one eye doesn’t mature the way it should. This is different from typical refractive errors like nearsightedness or farsightedness, because the issue isn’t just about focus—it’s about how the brain interprets vision.

There are a few common types:

Many children don’t complain about symptoms because the stronger eye takes over. That’s why early exams are so effective.

Signs and Symptoms to Watch For

Parents may notice small but important clues, such as:

If you notice any of these signs, it’s a good idea to book an eye exam. Even without symptoms, the Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends a first eye exam between 6–9 months, at least one exam between ages 2–5, and annual eye exams for school-age children

What Causes Amblyopia?

Amblyopia can develop for several reasons:

Any condition that prevents the eyes from sending equal signals to the brain can lead to amblyopia.

Why Early Eye Exams Matter

Amblyopia is easier to treat when caught early. Studies show that treatment before age 7 has the highest success rate, though older children—and even some adults—can still benefit from targeted therapy.

If untreated, amblyopia can lead to:

Because the condition often goes unnoticed, early screening is one of the most effective ways to protect a child’s vision.

How Amblyopia Is Diagnosed

During a children’s eye exam, we assess:

We use child-friendly testing methods so the experience is comfortable and stress-free. Once we have the results, we discuss a treatment plan with parents and explain each step clearly.

Treatment Options for Amblyopia

Treatment depends on what’s causing the amblyopia. Common options include:

Glasses or Contact Lenses

Correcting unequal prescriptions is often the first step. Some children improve significantly with glasses alone.

Patching Therapy

A patch is placed over the stronger eye for a few hours each day. This encourages the brain to use the weaker eye. Patching remains one of the most effective treatments and is supported by decades of research.

Adult Treatment

While treatment is most effective in childhood, newer research suggests that adults may still see improvements with targeted vision therapy. When it’s indicated, we refer you to a colleague who focuses on vision therapy.  Every case is different, so a proper evaluation is important.
